Committee of ’68 Demands Investigation into Dirty War

The Committee of 68 For Democratic Freedoms demanded that federal authorities continue the investigation against those responsible for the Dirty War in Mexico.
Through a statement, the members of the committee assure that the death of Luis Echeverría does not annul the crimes committed.
“The death of Echeverría does not extinguish the cause of a state crime. We demand the continuation of judicial processes, the list of perpetrators is known to all and they continue to enjoy impunity and the protection of official political power,” the statement read.

The Committee also requests the extinction of ownership of the property of the former president so that the resources obtained can be used to repair damage to the victims.

“For more than five decades we have fought for the clarification of what happened and the demand for justice, punishment of those responsible, reparation of the damage and guarantees of non-repetition.”
Luis Echeverría dies at the age of 100
Former President Luis Echeverria Alvarez, who ruled Mexico from 1970 to 1976, died Saturday at the age of 100. He is the only former Mexican president to have been brought to justice on charges of genocide and crimes against humanity.
His death comes two weeks after the government opened military files on politically motivated enforced disappearances of people during the 1970s to relatives of victims.
In 2002, an investigation was launched into his responsibility for several crimes committed during the Dirty War, including the Tlatelolco massacre of 1968, the massacre known as “Halconazo” in 1971, and the enforced disappearance of several people.
The “halconazo” meant a new blow against the students when a paramilitary group known as “Los Halcones”, attacked hundreds of students who were marching on the Mexico-Tacuba highway demanding the release of political prisoners, the repeal of the Organic Law of the Autonomous University of Nuevo León and demanded the dissolution of the porrile groups in middle and high schools.
