“Rebels” of Christian Democracy begin to mobilize for Rejection

Less than two months before the exit plebiscite set for September 4, the different positions of the political world on whether or not to approve the proposal for a new Constitution erected from the Constitutional Convention continue to be announced.
Despite the fact that the National Board determined that the Christian Democracy will go for the Approve, a group made up of former President Frei, various senators, deputies and former ministers -using freedom of conscience- said that it will go for the Rejection, thus delivering the foundations of its decision
“The PDC, for the most part, has established a position in favor of the Apruebo, respecting freedom of conscience. We want to say that, in conscience, we will vote for the Rejection and we will share in a transparent way with the citizens the fundamentals of our option,” they said.
“We do it because it is a partisan, refoundational and maximalist Constitution, which divides Chileans,” they added.
In the same vein, they maintained that “the text offered to us contains definitions that are outside the national reality, and distances us from the objectives of democracy and development. There are also positive aspects such as the Social and Democratic State of Law, which we aspire to maintain and deepen.”
“Each and every one of us has already publicly defined ourselves in favor of Rejection, and we have made known the reasons for this position. In the coming weeks we will hold meetings and conversations to expose the serious deficiencies of the constitutional text that is offered to us, and the alternatives we propose,” they said.
It should be noted that the letter is signed by former President Frei, Belisario Velasco, Ximena Rincón, Matías Walker, Andrés Zaldívar, Eric Aedo, Joanna Pérez, Jorge Safirio, Miguel Ángel Calisto, Fuad Chahin, Gianni Rivera, Juan Carlos Latorre, Alejandro Foxley, Jorge Burgos, Patricio Walker, Jorge Cash, Claudio Elortegui, Ignacio Walker, Marcelo Urrutia and David Morales.

“We will vote Rejection to continue fighting for a new and good Constitution that reflects a broad national agreement,” they said.
