Peru Prosecutor’s Office to Investigate President Pedro Castillo for Influence Peddling

The prosecutor’s office of Peru will investigate President Pedro Castillo for the alleged crime of influence peddling in a case of promotions to military of the Armed Forces and summoned him to testify on August 4, the entity said on Wednesday (13.07.2022).
According to the hypothesis of the Public Ministry, Bruno Pacheco, Castillo’s former adviser, and the former Minister of Defense, Walter Ayala, “would have operationalized and materialized the criminal project,” thanks to which together with the president they would have benefited economically.

Because of these accusations, Castillo was summoned to testify before the prosecutor’s office on August 4, a day after Pacheco, who is currently a fugitive from Peruvian justice, said the RPP broadcaster.
The Public Ministry will investigate whether Castillo committed the crime of influence peddling, opening a case similar to the one closed by the former prosecutor of the nation Zoraida Ávalos, who argued that a president could not be investigated during his term.
According to the suspicions of the prosecutor of the nation Patricia Benavides, Castillo, Ayala and Pacheco would have irregularly granted the promotion to two members of the Army, three others of the Air Force and two more of the National Police, according to the newspaper El Comercio.
The investigation indicates that Pacheco would have been in charge of organizing the fraudulent promotions from the Government Palace, with the support of Ayala from the Ministry of Defense.

In addition, it is estimated that there would have been meetings at the presidential headquarters with colonels of the National Police to pressure them and commit the alleged crimes.
