Codelco temporarily halts projects after the death of two workers

The National Copper Corporation (Codelco), the world’s largest copper producer, said on Wednesday it had decided to suspend all its projects under construction following the deaths of two workers.
The mining regulator Sernageomin had already ordered the stoppage of works on the Rajo Inca extension, of the small Salvador division, due to irregularities detected after the death of an operator.

Added to this was the death of another worker reported on Wednesday at the Chuqui Underground project.
“The process of stopping all operational activities of the projects has begun, ” of the Vice Presidency of Projects, the firm told Reuters.
“They will restart once the correct compliance with the security controls at each site has been reviewed,” he added.
The vice presidency is in charge of the so-called “structural projects” with which the mining company seeks to maintain its level of production in the coming years.
The migration of Chuquicamata to an underground mine and the new El Teniente Mine level are some of the initiatives currently being developed.

The head of Sernageomin complained this week to parliamentarians that the vice presidency’s security protocols were not in line with those of the company’s other divisions.
