Historical: Educator Elizabeth Andrade Receives 2022 National Human Rights Award

On the occasion of recognizing the outstanding work in the defense of the rights to housing and the fundamental rights of migrants, during this week the leader and educator of preschoolers, Elizabeth Andrade, was awarded the National Human Rights Award 2022.
The prize is awarded by the Council of the National Institute of Human Rights (INDH), who recognized the trajectory and the different projects promoted by the activist. In the same vein, the director (s) of the INDH, Consuelo Contreras, highlighted the actions carried out by Andrade in terms of gender, considering “the increase in the rates of domestic violence and femicides, which should generate alarm and urgent state interventions”.
For her part, Elizabeth Andrade thanked the award and recognized the collective work she does together with her neighbors of the Nuevo Amanecer Latino camp. 
“Living in camps is not easy, but the struggle to build adequate housing is a right that each of us knows and keeps in mind every day,” he said. “For a year and four months my neighbors in Los Arenales raised the common pots. We got to cook 280,000 servings of food,” he added.
Career 
Due to a situation of gender violence, Andrade arrived at the Nuevo Amanecer Latino camp in Antofagasta, where she constantly works advising communities in other countries on immigration procedures, housing and providing information about access to health and education rights.
One of its outstanding projects is the Los Arenales Community Garden, an initiative to encourage women’s access to the world of work and the overcoming of gender violence. According to Andrade at the awards, violence against women is a problem that should be a priority for state entities.  
“May women’s rights not be further violated. I hope that all the institutions that work through the gender approach know that we do not have to imprison ourselves, but that those who attack us, face justice, “said the educator.

The activist is also co-founder of the National Network of Migrant organizations and Pro Migrantes of Chile, an organization that works to promote inclusion and provide guidance to thousands of people in their documentation and access to the rights to health and education. It also influenced the processing of the new Migration and Aliens Law.
