SEP asks not to leave children without education and attend face-to-face classes

The Secretary of Public Education (SEP), Delfina Gómez Álvarez, called on students, as well as mothers and fathers to attend face-to-face classes, for the next school year, despite the fifth wave of COVID-19 infections.
During a school support ceremony in San Luis Potosí, the official said that the school has proven to be the safest place for free spread of COVID-19.
“As a society, we have the great opportunity not to leave children and adolescents without education,” said the secretary.

In addition, he pointed out that the three levels of government work with mothers, fathers and guardians in the management of sanitary protocols to guarantee the safe return to the campuses.
A study conducted by the organization México Evalúa and Tecnológico de Monterrey revealed that after the closure of schools caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, more than half a million students left school.
The highest dropout rate was seen at the preschool level, whose enrollment decreased by 13%. The second most affected sector was the upper middle level, with a 7% reduction in its enrollment.
The figures highlight that after the closure of schools, Mexico lost a year and a half in terms of learning.
Private schools faced the biggest reduction in their enrollment, -26%, with a loss of more than 250,000 students, according to the study.
The most affected students were those who already had school problems prior to the pandemic, in addition to the poorest students.
