Peru: The president changed the police leadership after the raid on the Government Palace

Peruvian President Pedro Castillo announced today the replacement of the leadership of the General Command, the head of the General Staff and the General Inspectorate of the National Police of Peru.This fact comes fifteen days after anti-corruption officers raided the Government Palace in search of the president’s sister-in-law, Yenifer Paredes, accused of corruption.

In addition to pointing to Paredes as the leader of a corruption ring, the Attorney General’s Office accuses Castillo and his wife, Lilia Paredes, of being accomplices.  At the time, the official described the actions of the armed forces as “illegal” and said that it is a campaign orchestrated by the opposition to overthrow him. On August 10, Peruvian police finally arrested Paredes and she is currently in preliminary detention. Tomorrow, Sunday, the Justice will decide if he will be remanded in custody.

For his part, Abel Gamarra, Deputy Minister of Internal Order, declared that the measures that were announced today are “a natural change because there was a change of Minister of the Interior.”
“What the norm says has not been violated and the police command is not being run over”

So far, there are six investigations carried out by the prosecutor’s office on President Castillo. However, until his term ends in July 2026, he cannot be brought to trial.
