In Libya, political clashes left 32 dead and 159 injured

In Tripoli, Libya’s capital, more than 32 people were killed and 159 injured yesterday as armed groups clashed. Given the rivalry between the country’s two main political forces, armed clashes spread throughout all neighborhoods of the capital city. One of the political groups, a native of Tripoli, is represented by Abdelhamid Dbeibah and the other, based in eastern Libya, is led by Fathi Bashagha and is supported by a well-known anti-Islamist military, Khalifa Hafter. On July 22, Bashaga tried to take control of that capital for the first time. On that occasion, 16 citizens lost their lives and another 50 were injured. For its part, the transitional government was in charge of organizing the elections in December 2021 but that never happened due to conflicts of interest regarding civic rules and the presence of controversial candidates. The conflicts deepened when in February 2022, the Parliament of Benghazi determined that the Executive led by Dbeibah, would be joined by a new power of the same characteristics led by Bashagha.Despite Bashagha’s attempts to get Dbeibah to resign, he assured that he will only leave public functions once the citizens have elected a new government. Since then, Libya has had a dozen interim governments, as presidential elections have yet to be held.
