Durango approves marriage equality by decree

The Durango government issued a decree authorizing marriage equality without restrictions, beyond the requirements established by the state’s Civil Code.
This decree, according to the official government newspaper, orders civil registries that without distinction of gender they can process marriage without discrimination and without the need for a legal remedy.

“Marriages shall be celebrated by ensuring non-discrimination based on ethnic or national origin, gender, disabilities, social status, health conditions, religion, opinions, sexual preferences or any other that violates human dignity and aims to nullify or impair human rights,” the document highlights.
The decree is in force as of September 19.
With this, Durango joins other entities in the country such as Veracruz, CDMX, Jalisco and Yucatan that also recognize equal marriage.

LGBTQ+ groups previously called on the governor-elect of Durango, Esteban Villegas Villarreal, to make known his position on equal marriage.
