Dominican Republic Reports Flooding from Hurricane Fiona

Almost 800 displaced people, floods, demolition of trees and power poles is the provisional balance of the passage through the Dominican Republic of Hurricane Fiona, category 1, and that made landfall last morning in the eastern part of the country, as it transpired this Monday (19.09.2022).
According to a preliminary report by the Emergency Operations Center (COE), there are 789 people displaced from their homes and 54 homes are damaged, mainly in the east and northeast of the country, the areas most affected by the phenomenon that moves through Dominican territory, entirely on alert. In addition, more than 11,500 people do not have electricity.
Fiona, the first hurricane to enter the Dominican Republic since Ivan in 2004, continues to cause heavy rain and winds. The hurricane made landfall through Cabo San Rafael (east of the country) and is located about 25 kilometers southwest of Punta Cana, where moderate to heavy rains and maximum sustained winds of 150 kilometers / hour are recorded, with higher gusts, according to the National Meteorological Office.
According to predictions, the accumulated rainfall will range between 100 and 300 millimeters, although they can be higher in isolated points and reach about 450 millimeters. Faced with this situation, the warning of urban floods, floods of rivers, streams and ravines, as well as landslides in several provinces of the country is maintained.
Meanwhile, a man died on Monday in the municipality of Nagua, in the northeast of the Dominican Republic, by the fall of a tree in his house amid heavy rains and winds caused by Hurricane Fiona.
It is expected that, when Fiona moves away from Dominican territory, she will do so with category 2 on the Saffir-Simpson scale, over a maximum of 5. Fiona arrived in the Dominican Republic after hitting Puerto Rico on September 18, where it caused damage described as “catastrophic”, a general blackout and major flooding.
