United States: at least eight dead after hurricane Ian passed through Florida

Hurricane Ian has caused at least eight deaths, devastated cities, more than 2 million people without electricity and major flooding as it passes through Florida, United States.As images multiply of streets transformed into channels of murky waters, boats lying on the ground and houses destroyed, the latest balance in the southern state reports at least eight deaths, according to AFP. It is worth mentioning that a boat with at least 27 Cuban migrants sank on Wednesday off the coast of Florida during the passage of the hurricane. The U.S. Coast Guard is still searching for 20 missing, as three castaways were rescued from the water and four others swam ashore.

Ian, which has already devastated western Cuba in recent days, is expected to move inland from the aforementioned state, exit to the Atlantic Ocean and end up affecting the states of Georgia and South Carolina, according to the forecasts of the National Hurricane Center (NHC) of the United States. Joe Biden said during a visit to the offices of the federal agency that fights natural disasters in Washington: “This could be the deadliest hurricane in Florida’s history.” In turn, Biden delivered federal aid to local authorities after declaring a state of disaster in Florida to begin work on recovery in the hardest-hit areas, especially in Charlotte, Collier, DeSoto, Hardee, Hillsborough, Lee, Manatee, Pinellas and Sarasota counties.
