Bulgaria votes to elect government for the fourth time in a year and a half

In Bulgaria today, parliamentary elections are being held for the fourth time in a year and a half. The elections to elect a new government take place in a context of inflation, corruption and the war in Ukraine.Currently the Balkan country has a parliamentary government, which means that citizens vote for the renewal of Parliament and the party that obtains the most votes will be the one that will form the Government. The first exit polls will be known when the polling stations close at 20 hours (14 in Argentina), but everything indicates that the current ruling party Gerb will lead the results since it presents a 25% intention to vote.

Boiko Borissov, former Prime Minister.

In the last legislative debates the main agenda items were related to corruption, economic insecurity, and inflation of 20% that threatens the poorest country in the European Union. In turn, the main concern revolves around the approaching winter, given that the war conflict between Russia and Ukraine increased the prices of all goods and services, including access to energy and food. In his last campaign rally, former Prime Minister Boiko Borissov, 63, pledged to “order chaos” and “work for the stability of the country.” His main opponent, Kiril Petkov, declared that he wants to “continue the change,” in a play on words with his party’s name, We Continue change.

Kiril Petkov, businessman and politician.

“The challenge is to choose between a European, progressive and transparent Bulgaria, or a return to years of political corruption,” Petkov said at his last campaign rally. The 42-year-old businessman made the Bulgarian political scene last year, when he ruled the country for seven months after being ousted by a no-confidence motion. It is currently 9 points below Borissov.Meanwhile, the political crisis deepens and the mass emigration of young Bulgarians does not seem to be slowing down; in the last ten years the country has already lost a tenth of its population.
