Mario Delgado, national leader of Morena, asked the local deputies of the party to accelerate the discussion and vote on the reform that extends the presence of soldiers and sailors in public security until 2028, so that it is approved “as soon as possible.”
As it is a constitutional reform, it not only requires the approval of the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate, but also more than half of the state congresses.
The first to do so was Oaxaca and, according to Delgado, those of Mexico City, Campeche and Sinaloa have already joined.
“How good that our deputies throughout the country are helping to approve this reform as soon as possible,” Delgado said at a press conference on Wednesday.
“We ask our deputies to help throughout the country, in the local congresses, so that this is approved as soon as possible,” he added.
Delgado hoped that this endorsement will be reached soon due to the presence of Morena in the congresses of the 32 entities of the country.
After the reform was approved by both houses of the federal Congress, Interior Secretary Adán Augusto López began touring the states to promote the issue.
In his conference on Wednesday, Delgado supported that the secretary is lobbying for the approval of the reform.
The modification that extends the military presence in the streets for public security tasks generates controversy, as academics, organizations, activists and people in general argue that this deepens the militarization of the strategy against crime.
On the other hand, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and his party maintain that the country is not militarizing.
