The need to pay more attention to mental health at work

The emergence of Covid-19 and the consequent pandemic and quarantines imposed worldwide, caused a 25% increase in anxiety and general depression in the world, bringing the issue of mental health to the fore.
But, above all, how unprepared work environments were in general to deal with their problems.
Among the main causes that threaten the mental health of workers, are the great workload that many experience – which for many was further aggravated by teleworking – psychological violence or “mobbing”, a form of workplace harassment that has a negative impact on mental health, in addition to isolation.
While telecommuting may be seen as a benefit for many, for others social distancing can be catastrophic for their mental well-being.
“In addition to being clearly harmful to the health of the individual and his family, poor mental health has immediate negative effects on the work performance and overall productivity of companies. It is important that companies devote significant efforts to maintaining optimal mental health of all their workers,” says Andrea Gamboa, People & Culture Manager at ManpowerGroup Chile.
Today, where 3 out of 10 workers demand more attention on these issues, one of the main objectives of companies should be the prevention of risks to mental health, in addition to promoting a work environment that actively protects it.
Companies that thrive will be those that invest time and resources in implementing active strategies where the focus is on prevention rather than cure. Dates like this October 10, which was World Mental Health Day, are the perfect opportunity to put the issue on the front page once again.
