CAS ruled against Ecuador over Byron Castillo case

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) today sanctioned Ecuador with a fine of 100 thousand Swiss francs for including footballer Byron Castillo with false information about his nationality during the Qatar 2022 Qualifiers. In addition, the body determined that the cast commanded by Gustavo Alfaro will start with three points less the path to qualification to the World Cup 2026.De this way, the appeals filed by the federations of Peru and Chile were partially accepted and the decision of the FIFA Appeal Committee of September 15, 2022 was annulled. However, the table of the last Qualifiers was not altered and the Ecuadorian team will be able to play the World Cup, which will start on November 20. The other economic sanction will go through the expenses of the trial of Chile and Peru, which are around 10 thousand Swiss francs, and will be paid by the Ecuadorian Football Federation. In addition, Castillo did not receive an individual sanction, so he will not have to pay any fine. To reach this conclusion, CAS held that the Federation of Ecuador (FEF) “is held responsible for using a document containing false information, in violation of Article 21 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code and, therefore, is sanctioned under Article 6 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code.” However, the body dismissed the claim of the Chilean Football Federation, which requested that Castiilo was not eligible in the eight matches he played in the qualifiers and, therefore, that those matches lost by Ecuador be considered, since they considered that the defender was eligible to play with the Ecuadorian national team. It is worth mentioning that Ecuador will open on Sunday 20 the Qatar World Cup against the host, from 13.00 (Argentine time), for group A.
