Ecuador’s police chief, Commander Fausto Salinas, reported Monday a new attack on a police station in the coastal province of Guayas, where last week there were several attacks on police units, gas stations and the explosion of cars.
“Last week was a difficult, complicated week for the country and especially for the National Police,” Salinas said.
In the context of “criminal actions of narcoterrorism,” last week there were six police officers killed and 29 were injured, he added.
He pointed out that they maintain actions against criminal groups known as “the chonekillers” and the “tiguerones,” but the attacks continue.

“This morning we woke up with an attack against a Community Police Unit (UPC) in Guayaquil, and anyway, the response has been forceful,” and made the “legitimate use” of firearms, he said. He added that there were “two wounded by the attackers and one person who has bruises.”
They are reprisals from drug traffickers
The police chief said that so far this year they have seized about “170 tons of narcotic substances subject to control” and many dismantled criminal organizations.
“That causes the main clash to be against our police officers,” he said, noting that last week’s attack, especially at fuel stations, “is to cause fear.”
Salinas said that on Monday morning in Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas a gang with weapons was captured, and they are investigating other ramifications of criminal organizations.
The attacks began last week, the day authorities began transferring more than 1,000 inmates to other prisons. The military and police also raided the Litoral Penitentiary and seized weapons, ammunition, explosives and illegal communication systems.
“The response of the narco-criminals was to try to sow terror in Guayaquil, Durán, Esmeraldas and Santo Domingo,” the government of President Guillermo Lasso said in a video released to the press.
