Borghi’s unexpected praise for Scaloni: “He’s Argentine but he doesn’t look Argentine”

Claudio Borghi, former midfielder who was world champion in Mexico 1986, benched the work of Lionel Scaloni at the head of the Argentine National Team and launched an atypical praise: “He is Argentine but he does not look Argentine.” The former coach of Boca and Argentinos, among others, said that the technical director of the National Team “has covered his mouth” and stressed: “They will hate me … Because Scaloni is Argentine but he doesn’t look Argentine. It is the summary that I make: it is not canchero, it does not use aritos, it does not use strange words. I see him as a guy, a gringo, a country gringo. I never saw him sing, with a misplaced statement,” in an interview with TyC Sports. He doesn’t look Argentine. Is Scaloni Argentine?”, he continued with a laugh and argued: “Something that does not abound in Argentina is humility. In Argentina we have ego. It is very good to have it, the problem is that sometimes it manages the person. Scaloni manages the ego. He manages his ego very well.”

In this context, he valued that “he is very cautious in everything he says and does” and that he wishes “that he does very well” in Qatar 2022: “I like that he represents a guy who is not very Argentine in some situations,” he said. I am not going to give predictions, but I hope to see a good World Cup, “he said hopefully and acknowledged that “the humility that this team has shown is, for me, the most important thing.” “I’m going to say it with a lot of respect, this kid had the eggs to grab a National Team in an interim, convince, be, project and qualify and, from his confirmation as coach, he deployed in a better way, convinced. It made many of us change our minds about interims,” he continued.

In addition, he recalled the arrival of Scaloni in 2018: “Taking charge of a team like this, having the best player in the world, and that the best player in the world never complains … It is a wonderful virtue. I wish him well. It’s covered my mouth.” Finally, he closed: “I think he has all the capabilities, good management … I see him as a neighborhood kid, I don’t see him dressed weirdly, talking about Martian tactics. I see him as an ordinary guy in charge of one of the best teams in the world. I wish him every success,” and concluded: “He has been successful so far and hopefully he will crown all this work with a world championship.”
