Mali: Argentine arrested for having expired document released

After spending more than six months in prison in Bamako, Mali’s capital, for having an expired passport and not being able to prove work or residence, Nicolas Bossié, 32, was released on Friday by authorities. The Argentine began his journey around the world ten years ago, and until his arrival in Morocco, everything happened in good condition. But when he wanted to cross the border between Senegal and Mali with his passport expired, he was detained by the authorities, who judge the situation as a criminal offense under their laws. In addition, unable to prove work or residence, the young man was taken to a prison in Kayes. According to Telam, Simón Padrós, the Argentine ambassador to Algeria, was sent by the Foreign Ministry when the situation became publicly known to make the corresponding documentation. On the trip, Padrós met with the Minister of Justice and Human Rights of Mali and the Director of Legal and Consular Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. When his mission was completed, Bossié was transferred to the capital. Almost a month later, the Argentine was finally released last Friday from prison, but must remain in the African country until the conclusion of the judicial process.
