Venezuela: Chevron received U.S. authorization to resume activities

The government of the United States announced on Sunday that it authorizes the oil company Chevron Corporation to resume “limited operations of extraction of natural resources” in the country after the agreement reached by the opposition and the government of Nicolás Maduro, although the bulk of the sanctions will remain in force. Through an official statement, the Treasury Department explained the reason for the new measure. “This action reflects the longstanding policy of the United States of providing targeted sanctions relief based on concrete measures that alleviate the suffering of the Venezuelan people and support the restoration of democracy,” he said.

Then from Washington they also added that “we have long made it clear that we believe that the best solution in Venezuela is a negotiated solution between the two parties.” On the other hand, they assured that “other sanctions and restrictions related to Venezuela imposed by the United States remain in force.” In that regard, Treasury stressed the heavy hand they will continue to apply.” The United States will vigorously enforce these sanctions and continue to hold accountable any actor who engages in acts of corruption, violates U.S. laws, or abuses human rights in Venezuela,” the statement added. For its part, upon hearing the news, Chevron expressed that “we reiterate our commitment to carry out our business in compliance with the established framework.” Previously, Maduro said on his Twitter account that “the commitment will always be to dialogue with all Venezuelan society” and that today “we continue to take important steps for the well-being of our country,” after the success of the dialogue for the elections in 2024.
