Qatar 2022: FIFA opens disciplinary proceedings against Argentina and the Netherlands

FIFA announced on Saturday the opening of disciplinary proceedings against the Football Federations of Argentina and the Netherlands for incidents between players and members of the coaching staff in Friday’s quarterfinal match at the World Cup in Qatar.
“The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has opened proceedings against the Argentine Football Association for potential violations of articles 12 (misconduct of players and coaching staff) and 16 (order and security in matches) of the FIFA Disciplinary Code during the Netherlands-Argentina FIFA World Cup match, which took place on 9 December.” FIFA explains in its statement.
“In addition, the FIFA Disciplinary Committee has opened proceedings against the Dutch Football Association for potential violations of Article 12 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code in relation to the same match.”
The match, won by Argentina on penalties (4-3 after a 2-2 draw) was especially tense and the referee of the same, the Spanish Mateu Lahoz, showed fifteen yellow cards (eight to the Argentines and seven to the Dutch), as well as a red to Denzel Dumfries during the penalty shootout.
Defiant attitude
In the extra time of the first half he had admonished Wout Weghorst, who was then on the bench of substitutes. In the second half, Weghorst came into play and scored the two goals that allowed the Netherlands to force extra time.
The penalty shootout was also tense. After Lautaro Martinez scored the shot that qualified Argentina, the Albiceleste players rushed towards him with a defiant attitude to the Dutch, grouped in the center circle.
Throughout the match there was tension between both teams and at certain times there were attempts at fights, which forced the intervention of Mateu Lahoz to avoid a degradation of the situation.
