There were more than 10,000 active cases in one month and nearly 200 deaths

The end of the year came with the sixth wave of COVID-19 infections, registering an increase of 34,290 infections and 199 deaths in just over a month.
Prior to the end of week 49 of the year, health authorities have registered 7 million 145 thousand 409 accumulated cases, as well as 330 thousand 592 recognized deaths.
According to figures from the Ministry of Health, the beginning of the sixth wave began in November, when the beginning of the trend began.

Although some states, such as Mexico City, State of Mexico, Nuevo León, Guanajuato, Jalisco, San Luis Potosí, Veracruz, Tabasco, Puebla and Sonora concentrate most of the cases, the incidence is increasing more in other states.
So far, Quintana Roo has the highest incidence with more than 70 cases of COVID per 100 thousand inhabitants and 1377 active cases of the 13 thousand 722 reported by the Ministry of Health.

It is followed by Yucatan, with an incidence of 50 cases per 100 thousand inhabitants; Mexico City, with 40; Sonora, Chihuahua and Campeche, with 20.

In Nuevo León, where health authorities reactivated the mandatory use of face masks in all closed places, the incidence is about 10 cases per 100,000 inhabitants and concentrates 458 active cases.
Sixth wave alerted with mixture of influenza and respiratory infections
The Special Commission for the Attention of the Emergency by COVID-19 of the UNAM warned that this wave of infections comes with cases of other respiratory diseases.
“The current epidemic of respiratory infections that makes up the sixth wave of the pandemic is more complex because COVID, influenza and other respiratory viruses are involved. It’s a wave that’s shaping up differently. The infections are not as severe or as lethal as they were in other waves,” explained Samuel Ponce de León, coordinator of the University Health Research Program at UNAM.

Although the dominant variant globally since November 2021 remains omnin, there is currently a set of subvariants that continue to be studied, with very similar manifestations.
“As has happened in the previous two years, it is highly likely that the end of the year celebrations will increase the risk of contagion, causing a large number of cases of acute respiratory infections and pneumonia, which can represent an additional burden on health services, as well as the inappropriate use of antibiotics, risk of generation of new viral variants, displacement in the care of other diseases, sequelae, suffering and costs associated with care, “said the commission that recommends maintaining preventive measures, including the use of face masks in closed spaces.
