FTX crypto platform founder Sam Bankman-Fried arrested

The founder and former CEO of the FTX cryptocurrency platform, Sam Bankman-Fried, was detained by the Bahamas police, according to the Attorney General of that country through a statement. The Bahamas acted after receiving formal notification from the United States that there are criminal charges against the businessman, following the bankruptcy of his company that left millions in damages to thousands of his clients. In a tweet, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York Damian Williams said Bahamian authorities had arrested Bankman-Fried at the request of the U.S. government, “based on a secret indictment” filed by prosecutors about which details will be given soon. In this context, Bankman-Fried was scheduled to testify by videoconference before a committee of the US House of Representatives on Tuesday. As a result of the notice received and the material provided with it, it was deemed appropriate for the Attorney General to request the arrest of Sam Bankman-Fried and keep him in custody pursuant to our country’s Extradition Act,” stated the office of Bahamas Attorney General Ryan Pinder. The moment a formal extradition request is made, The Bahamas intends to process it expeditiously, in accordance with Bahamian law and its treaty obligations to the United States,” the statement added. Although extradition to the United States is anticipated to be imminent, the Bahamas will continue to investigate the collapse of FTX. In the same statement, Bahamian Prime Minister Philip Davies also stated, saying: “The Bahamas and the United States have a common interest in holding accountable all individuals associated with FTX who may have betrayed the public trust and broken the law. While the United States files criminal charges against Bankman-Fried individually, The Bahamas will continue its own regulatory and criminal investigations into the FTX collapse, with the continued cooperation of its regulatory and law enforcement partners in the United States and elsewhere.”
