President Andrés Manuel López Obrador ruled out that Morena’s coordinator in the Senate, Ricardo Monreal, will be expelled from the party for voting against the electoral reform, although he assured that it will be the people and history who will judge the actions of politicians.
“No, no purges, out of conviction, and we don’t want them to use an attitude of intolerance to entrench the conservative belief that we are Stalinists. No, we have a huge advantage, we have a very politicized people who put everyone in their place,” he said.

During his morning conference, López Obrador declared that it is not necessary for any authority or leader to decide on the behavior of a militant because there is “a popular tribunal.”

“I regret that you do not want to accept this new reality and think that it is like before, but a long time ago the country is something else,” he said.

He stressed that since the constitutional reform was rejected, “a limited, limited reform was resorted to, so as not to violate the Constitution and only deals with some issues that are still important, for example, that there is austerity in the management of the INE budget, because they have a large bureaucratic apparatus with very high salaries. Now with this reform it is possible to compact some areas so that more is done with less, like everyone else.”
The president’s electoral reform was approved in the full Senate thanks to the votes of most of the Morena caucus and its allied parties.
However, in the Moreno bloc, he highlighted the position of coordinator Ricardo Monreal, who distanced himself from the parliamentary group by voting against “Plan B” in electoral matters. Hours before the vote, Monreal outlined his position under the argument that the presidential proposal – in his opinion – has several points that are contrary to the Constitution.
