Journalist Omar Castro attacked in Cajeme, Sonora

A man attacked journalist Omar Castro, director of the media outlet La Nota Prensa de Sonora, in the municipality of Cajeme, on the night of January 1.
According to the media, the attack occurred at 7:40 p.m. on Real del Casaros Street in the Misión del Real neighborhood, when the journalist was traveling with his daughter and nephew.
“They were intercepted by a subject who, shouting ‘I’m going to kill you’ attacked the vehicle on the side where the minor was traveling without managing to injure anyone, only material damage,” the site reported.

So far, the Sonora Prosecutor’s Office has not issued information about the attack or arrest of the alleged perpetrator.
Mexico closed 2022 accounting for 20% of the murders of journalists in the world, according to the report by Reporters Without Borders (RSF).

Although 13 journalists were killed in the country during the year, the report pointed to 11 cases for being directly linked to their profession.
“Some countries, such as Mexico, still do not control the violence that gangrene their territories and directly affects journalists,” Reporters Without Borders reported on December 30 in its annual report.
Earlier this December, following an armed attack on journalist Ciro Gómez Leyva, more than 170 Mexican journalists demanded that President Andrés Manuel López Obrador cease the harassment and hate speech against critical journalists.
