Guido Girardi’s bad omen ahead of Constitutional Council elections: “The May election is already lost”

“We are in a complex situation (…). I am part of this government in its ideology, in its vision of content (…). We have made a decision to collaborate with this government and support it, and we have done so loyally (…), despite the fact that in the Broad Front (FA) and in the Communist Party (PC) they do not want us,” was the harsh analysis of former senator of the Party for Democracy (PPD) Guido Girardi, during a private meeting held at the headquarters of the collectivity – which is part of one of the coalitions of the ruling party (Democratic Socialism) together with Apruebo Dignidad.
According to La Tercera, former Senator Girardi also indicated that “we are marginal in this government in content, ideas and contributions, they do not consider us.” But evidently, he added, during the meeting of the party that was also attended by former ministers Nicolás Eyzaguirre, Adriana Delpiano, Sergio Bitar, Francisco Vidal and Heraldo Muñoz, “it is the government that we have to support, because if not, it is the debacle.”
Girardi considered it necessary to build an identity as Democratic Socialism from now on. In his opinion, “if we never make this decision, we are doomed to disappear, we are going to dissolve into a political project that is not ours.” And, despite the alliance and support for President Gabriel Boric, they are clear that the president’s party is Social Convergence, one of the pillars of Apruebo Dignidad – whose foundations are the Broad Front (FA) and the Communist Party (PC).
As an example, the former legislator said that Senator Ximena Ordenes, who plans to be re-elected, “tells me ‘I prefer to be out of government, because ultimately I represent a different vision, of a different socialism.'” Given this, Guido Girardi said that “I believe that these decisions will eventually have to be evaluated, because here there is a responsibility for the project of Democratic Socialism, because the project of the FA and the PC that we have seen is not our project.”
In any case, he said that if Ministers Carolina Toha (PPD), Mario Marcel, Ana Lya Uriarte (PS), Carlos Montes (PS) and Undersecretaries Manuel Monsalve (PS) and Eduardo Vergara (PPD) were removed from the Executive “this government would not have (…) possibility of generating a sense of the future”.
Doubts about the single list of the ruling party and “the May election is already lost”
Regarding the upcoming elections of the Constitutional Council and the possibility of going on a single list as an official, Girardi said that “by going on a single list, many voters who voted for us historically (…) They’re not going to vote for us.”
“The only way for this government to survive … is to expand its base of support (…) generating in coordination (…) a list of Democratic Socialism that can push the border and that can dispute the scenario, the political space to the right (…)”, complemented the former PPD senator, according to the aforementioned media.
And he insisted: “This government has 25% support. We will surely finish next May (the month of the councillors’ elections) with 20% support. So, the question is whether we are going to intend our political and cultural challenges to achieve the representation of that 20% of support or are we going to make a democratic action of trying to broaden the base of support (…). We are leaving gigantic territory to others, I would say on the right, to represent that world.”
In that sense, according to Girardi, “the May election is already lost.” And he explained: “Here the right already has 60% in its pocket and could have more (…). I think we get fewer representatives going on a single list, because we’re going to have a lot fewer votes.”
It is worth mentioning that the president of the Democratic Revolution (RD), Senator Juan Ignacio Latorre, has declared that “our conviction is that the best thing today for the government alliance, for the ruling party, for the government, even electorally, is to go on a single list.” And a similar position outlined Comunes calling on the political parties that make up the government alliance to form a single electoral pact to dispute the constitutional council.
To overcome these differences, the helmsmen of the ruling parties are expected to meet this Friday at the headquarters of the Liberal Party.
