System failure forces mass disruption of flights in the United States

Major U.S. airports reported delays after the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reported a system failure on ground flights on Wednesday (11.01.2023).
The FAA said its Notice to Air Missions (NOTAM) system, which issues essential warnings to pilots and flight crew, had failed. The federal aviation agency added that it was working to restore the systems.
Shortly after issuing its first alert to notify users about the system outage, the FAA sent out a second alert saying some “features are starting to come back online.”

Still, “the operations of the National Airspace System remain limited,” he added.
FAA reported flight disruptions at 6:30 a.m. (Eastern Standard Time), 1130 GMT. About 760 delays were reported, according to FlightAware’s website.
The flight-tracking website said the massive delays occurred on flights in and out of the U.S. Domestic flights were also affected.
“We are conducting final validation checks and reloading the system now,” the FAA said. “Operations throughout the national airspace covered by the system are affected,” he added.

The FAA said it would update the status of flights and inform passengers as soon as more data became available.
NOTAMs used to be available through a hotline, but that was phased out with the use of the internet. The alerts range from airport construction information to urgent flight restrictions or broken equipment.
