President Dina Boluarte will go to the prosecutor’s office in investigation for deaths in protests

The president of Peru, Dina Boluarte, will be questioned on Tuesday by the prosecutor’s office in the framework of the investigation to determine her responsibility in the deaths that occurred during protests against her government, announced the defense of the president this Sunday (05.03.2023).
Boluarte has “all the will to want to contribute to the investigation of the truth and the investigation in particular,” his lawyer Kelly Montenegro told the newspaper El Comercio.
“If the prosecution indicates that the diligence will be in person, then it will be in person,” he added. “We are going to comply with everything that the Public Ministry provides.”
On January 10, the prosecutor’s office opened an investigation against Boluarte for the alleged crimes of “genocide, aggravated homicide and serious injuries” during the anti-government demonstrations of December 2022 and January 2023 in the regions of Apurímac, La Libertad, Puno, Junín, Arequipa and Ayacucho.
Boluarte replaced former President Pedro Castillo, who was arrested after being dismissed by Congress on December 7 after a failed coup d’état, at a time when he was under investigation on several corruption charges.
The 53-year-old rural teacher is serving 18 months in pretrial detention in the Barbadillo prison, east of Lima.
