Minister Toha rules out “pardon” for migrants who have pending expulsion

Interior Minister Carolina Toha on Thursday ruled out a “pardon” for those migrants who have pending their expulsion from the country.
“The people who were expelled and who have a decree are not going to have any ‘pardonazo’, in the least. Work is being done to recover that waiting list,” Tohá said at the presentation of Gobierno Informa, a space where the Executive communicates its measures.

In addition, the head of Interior pointed out that the list of pending expulsions “did not accumulate in this administration. When the government of President Boric took office, there were already 20,000 people with an expulsion decree issued, without this having been executed.”
Bolivia and redirection
The secretary of state also addressed Bolivia’s disagreement with the redirection of migrants. President Gabriel Boric said Wednesday that the neighboring country is not carrying out this procedure, but the Bolivian government pointed out that it corresponds to “Chilean regulations.” In this regard, Toha indicated that the problem “is resolved with bilateral agreements.”
“We do not have full diplomatic relations with Bolivia, as we do with Peru, therefore, with Peru we have advanced faster in having agreements that mean that if people cross the border through an unauthorized passage without meeting the requirements, they are returned and re-enter Peruvian territory,” said the head of Interior.
“In the case of Bolivia, when this happens with people of Bolivian nationality they are certainly received, but if they are people of another nationality Bolivia is not receiving them,” Tohá continued.
“How is that resolved, it is not with a Chilean law, because Chilean law does not oblige Bolivia, it is resolved with bilateral agreements, and that is why the work we are doing is diplomatic work, not only governmental but also through parliamentarians, with parliamentary diplomacy through the Andean Parliament,” he said.
