Government assures that entry of irregular migrants through the northern part of the country was reduced 55% compared to 2022

The Government, through the Undersecretary of the Interior, Manuel Monsalve, delivered a balance on the results of the Critical Infrastructure Law since its enactment at the beginning of February of this year. In the middle of his visit to the Tarapacá region, Monsalve reported that irregular migration at the border has been reduced by more than half compared to the same date last year.
Specifically, the Undersecretary of State emphasized that “as of March 19, 2022, the number of people detected entering Chile irregularly at the northern border was on average 967 per week. That was the reality last year. What is the reality this year? It is on average 440 people as of March 19, 55% less irregular entry on the northern border of the country.”
In the same vein, the government authority pointed out that there has been a sustained increase in the redirection of people seeking to enter Chile. A year ago, only 10% of them were returned to their country of origin. Meanwhile, today the number of redirects reaches 59%. In addition, Venezuelan migration fell from 80% to 36%.
Monsalve’s statements were made in March of the session of constitution of the Interministerial Committee for investment in the northern part of the country, which took place in the dependencies of the Faculty of Architecture of the Arturo Prat University, in the city of Iquique.
