Exhibition that tells the story of militant women in the military dictatorship inaugurated

With the aim of making visible the history of women during the military coup, the exhibition “And that sea that ‘calm’ bathes you” was inaugurated in the Cultural Park of Valparaíso, work that was carried out by the Collective Bordadoras por la Memoria de Valparaíso.
The work of the Collective exposes in its first tapestry the history of militant women in three milestones of their lives: the government of the Popular Unity, the period of political imprisonment and the resistance to the civic-military dictatorship. In a second tapestry, tribute is paid to Marta Ugarte Román, a teacher and dressmaker who was arrested, tortured and forcibly disappeared by agents of the State in 1976.
It is in 2016 and in the context of the declaration of the Cultural Park as a National Monument, in the category of historical monuments that a critical look emerges in the institution against experiences that had been made invisible in the role of women who have been social and political fighters. This was done with the desire to recover what had been the “Labor Workshop of 3 and 4 lamos”, between 1975 and 1976, where political prisoners made handicrafts and embroidered blouses as an act of resistance and solidarity with the political prison.

The head of the Department of Heritage, Memories and Human Rights of the Cultural Park of Valparaíso, Erick Fuentes indicated that, “we consider that the embroidered work values the protagonism of women before, during and after the civic-military dictatorship and in that sense, demands the urgency to continue deepening and making visible their memories in the defense and promotion of human rights in our recent history as a country. ”
“50 years after the coup d’état, we still know little about them, about their dreams, struggles and resistances; about their territories, projects and communities. It’s time to recognize them and bring them with us,” Erick added.
This exhibition will be available until May 3 in the Ex Galería de Reos, Transmission Building, of the Cultural Park of Valparaíso.
