For the second day in a row, China held “military drills” in Taiwan

After the Ministry of Defense of Taiwan denounced that the Chinese armed forces transit with a fighter jet and an anti-submarine helicopter through the island’s air defense identification zone, military drills began. Thus, during the day on Sunday and for the second consecutive day, the army of the country governed by Xi Jinping simulated precision attacks against “key targets on the island of Taiwan and in the surrounding waters,” according to AFP. It was also added that Beijing referred to the maneuvers and made it clear that they will last until Monday, as destroyers, speedboats, fighter jets, among others are being mobilized. Shi Yi, a spokesman for the Chinese military, said the actions are a “warning against collusion between separatist forces seeking Taiwan’s independence and outside forces.” Meanwhile, from Taiwan it was reported that today 11 warships and 70 Chinese planes were detected around the island, after having sighted nine ships and 71 aircraft the previous day. The maneuvers began after Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen met with the leader of the House of Representatives of the United States, Kevin McCarthy, where he expressed his country’s “unwavering support” for Taiwan.It should be remembered that both countries separated in 1949, after a civil war in which the communists took power in mainland China and where the nationalists retreated to Taiwan. Likewise, Beijing still considers the island as part of its territory.
