Jorge Vilda stopped being the coach of the Spanish women’s team after winning the World Cup

The Spanish coach Jorge Vilda has left his position today at the head of the women’s national team less than a month after the consecration in the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand and amid the controversy generated by the acts of Luis Rubiales, the president of the entity that regulates football in the Iberian country. “The Royal Spanish Football Federation, in one of the first renewal measures announced by President Pedro Rocha, has decided to dispense with the services of Jorge Vilda as sports director and women’s national coach, a position, the latter, to which he acceded in 2015,” he officially announced.  “The RFEF wants to express its gratitude to Jorge Vilda for the services provided, for his professionalism and his dedication during all these years, wishing him for the future the best success,” he continued. Vilda, 42, had taken over in 2015, although she had conflicts with the squad that erupted at Euro 2022 in England. After losing in the quarterfinals against the English, a malaise was rekindled by which 15 players resigned, including Aitana Bonmatí, who returned this year to be the MVP of the World Cup won by Spain.It should be remembered that this decision was taken by the leadership commanded by the president of the RFEF, Pedro Rocha, who is in office for at least three months, due to FIFA’s suspension of Luis Rubiales, who kissed player Jenni Hermoso without consent at the World Cup celebration.Montse Tomé, new coach of SpainA few minutes after this announcement, it was announced that Montse Tomé will occupy the position left by Vilda. In fact, she will be the first woman to hold this position in Spain. Tomé, 41, will make his Nations League debut against Sweden and Switzerland on Sept. 22 and 26 respectively.
