The Israeli government on Friday ordered the mass evacuation of “all civilians” from the northern Gaza Strip. The move, condemned by the UN and rejected by Hamas, could affect around a million people and prompted thousands of Palestinians to flee the area. The announcement was made by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), which urged civilians in Gaza City to evacuate south, citing concerns for their safety and that of their families. The IDF also said it would make “great efforts” to avoid harming civilians during its operations in the coming days, although they acknowledged that evacuation would take time. Since the start of the clashes last Saturday, the casualty toll has risen sharply. According to the Israeli military, around 1,300 people were killed in Israel, including 258 soldiers. On the Gaza side, Palestinian authorities reported that approximately 1,800 people were killed, including 583 children and 351 women. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas compared the mass displacement order to the 1948 exile, known as the Nakba, or “catastrophe” in Arabic. The president expressed his total rejection of the evacuation of Palestinians from Gaza, considering it a second Nakba for his people, referring to the 760,000 Palestinians who fled or were expelled from their homes during the war, coinciding with the creation of Israel. stating that its Palestinian people would not accept the threats of Israeli leaders and their call to leave their homes and flee to the south or Egypt.
