After the severe 5.6-magnitude earthquake that struck early Saturday in a remote area of western Nepal, authorities said the death toll rose to 143.According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the quake was centered 42 km south of Jumla, near the border with Tibet. and it was located at a depth of only 18 kilometers. It was also reported to have been felt in India’s capital, New Delhi, located almost 500 kilometers away. Speaking to the AFP news agency, Interior Ministry spokesman Narayan Prasad Bhattarai made it clear that “92 people were killed in Jajarkot and 40 in Rukum.” In addition, the head of communication of the national police, Kuber Kathayat, added that more than 100 wounded have been counted in these two districts. A large number of videos and photographs have been shared on social media showing locals digging through the rubble of destroyed buildings in search of survivors. On the other hand, it should be noted that in 2015 the country suffered a magnitude 7.8 earthquake that killed almost 9,000 people, destroyed more than half a million homes and damaged almost 8,000 schools and left almost a million children without classes.
