Guava certification for export is in process: Bedolla – MonitorExpresso.com

Morelia, Michoacán.- The Government of Michoacán, through the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (Sader), is carrying out studies so that next year the certification of guava orchards for export will be achieved.
Governor Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla reported that, through the Agri-Food Health and Safety Program, the State Committee for Plant Health operates the fruit fly project to preserve phytosanitary statuses and protect the crop from pests.
This is part of the strategy for guava producers in Michoacán to comply with the guidelines for the export of products established in the Official Mexican Standard NOM-023-FITO-1995.
The president explained that according to the National Service of Agri-Food Health, Safety and Quality (Senasica), Michoacán has 979 hectares of guava orchards certified for export to the United States, where 14,832 tons of fruit are produced, which represents only eight percent of the total generated in the state.
“Michoacán is a leader in guava production with 12,912 hectares that generated a production of 186,000 tons with a value of more than 1,220 million pesos,” he said.
He added that currently, the small volume that is exported from certified Michoacán producers is done through marketers in Aguascalientes.
He reiterated the need to comply with the criteria set by the Official Mexican Standard so that the state can reach other international markets, therefore, in coordination with the federal authorities, traceability will be given to the mobilization of the fruit.
