Mexico. – Ricardo Ruiz Suárez, Secretary of Government of Mexico City, delivered the Initiative to reform the local Penal Code, with a draft decree, which seeks to typify the crime of real estate corruption and establish penalties of between 10 and 20 years in prison, against public servants who participate in this illegal practice.
This initiative was delivered on the afternoon of Wednesday, January 10, at the offices of the Board of Directors of the Congress of Mexico City, the secretary mentioned that he hopes that: “the Congress will discuss the proposal quickly and that it will take into consideration the elements to, if necessary, approve it.”
The head of government of Mexico City, Martí Batres Guadarrama, was the one who presented the reform initiative against real estate corruption, which will be discussed in the next regular session.
The governor of Mexico City explained that the crime refers to the authorization of the construction of buildings or apartments additional to those established by law, through permits issued for the purpose of receiving money or apartments for personal benefit.
“The crime of real estate corruption is committed by a public servant who allows, by action, by omission or tolerates the construction of buildings or floors in addition to those authorized without complying with the requirements established by law. The penalty for the conduct described in this article shall be 10 to 20 years’ imprisonment, regardless of other penalties that correspond to other types of criminal offences.”
