France: Farmers to close roads around Paris

Despite Prime Minister Gabriel Attal’s announcements last Friday, farmers’ unions in France said they will continue their protests over the next week and will encircle the city of Paris by cutting off the country’s most important roads around it. Beset by the intense protests that took place over the past week, Paris will continue to be subjugated to demonstrations from Monday, with a new measure announced by two major farmers’ unions in France, including the National Federation of Farmers’ Unions (FNSEA). From Monday 29 at 2:00 p.m., farmers [….] will launch a siege of the capital for an unlimited duration,” the unions said, adding that “farmers will occupy the main access roads to the capital.” The mobilizations intensified in the last week in a demand to the Macron government for aid due to the “unfair competition” denounced by farmers. Last Friday, after days of intense protests, the French prime minister promised to suspend the increase in the price of agricultural diesel, along with various measures such as aid to specific sectors, greater control in negotiations between producers and distributors and the elimination of administrative procedures. Attal also reaffirmed the government’s rejection of the agreement Mercosur-UE.No however, the measures were not enough to calm the misgivings of producers, who announced that they will continue with the demonstrations and intensify them from next Monday. The FNSEA then explained that they will begin a stage of a “quasi-military” siege of Paris, which they are organized to defend for a week.
