Oscars 2024: What does the red pin used by some artists mean?

The Oscars gala is not only the night of cinema, but many artists take advantage of the world’s gaze to demonstrate for different causes that summon them. And at this 96th gala, different artists wore a red pin with a black hand calling for a “ceasefire in the Gaza Strip” and fighting for peace between the countries. Among the artists who chose to wear the ‘Artists4Ceasefire’ promoted pin were Mark Ruffalo and Ramy Youssef nominated for “Poor Things.” Let’s just stop killing children,” Youssef said when asked by the media, stating his political position. For their part, Milo Machado-Graner and Swann Arlaud, members of the cast of “Anatomy of a Fall,” joined the initiative. Singer Billie Eilish and her brother, director Ava DuVernay, actors Riz Ahmed, and Mahershala Ali also wore the pin alluding to the ceasefire between the countries of the Middle East. However, unlike other years, the artists did not make political speeches when receiving their awards, despite a complicated social context, where outside the doors of the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, several demonstrations were held that made the gala move forward 1 hour starting at 8:00 p.m. when they usually did it at 9:00 p.m. The only one on stage who verbalized his support for Gaza in the Israel-Hamas conflict was British filmmaker Jonathan Glazer, who won the Oscar for best international film for “The Zone of Interest.” And after receiving the award, the director compared the Holocaust to the war in Gaza. “Our film shows where dehumanization leads at its worst. It has shaped all of our past and present. Right now we are here as men who refute their Judaism and the holocaust hijacked by an occupation that has caused conflict for so many innocent people. Whether it’s the victims of October 7 in Israel or the ongoing assault on Gaza, all the victims of this dehumanization, how do we resist?” said the filmmaker who won the Oscar for “Best International Film” for “Zone of Interest,” the film set in World War II. The film also won an award for “Best Sound”.
