But the heartbreaking testimony about the treatment given to the Mexican sisters before the markings began captivated the court this week, while the man known as “Vanguard” by his followers looked from the defense table, taking notes, but without Show emotion. One of the sisters – whose full names were not disclosed by the prosecution for privacy reasons – offered a sexually graphic testimony of her family’s experience with Raniere. It all began when his parents, after taking courses in NXIVM, fell under the Influence of someone the organization described as “the smartest Man in the world,” he said. The woman, now aged 33, abandoned her formal education to go to the group’s headquarters in the Albany area to work as an intern at 2002, when she was 16, she said. Knowing Raniere was like meeting a “rock star,” he said, but the experience became bitter very soon when he found himself doing domestic work without pay. She was also accused of invented “ethical violations”. Raniere, who was forty years old then, offered to protect her before insinuating that she should take her virginity when she turned 18, the woman said. It was soon included in an “inner circle” of followers that fulfilled all the needs of Raniere, whether sexual or otherwise, he added. He said that sex was necessary to “help them grow,” he recounted. Later, her older sister was sent to NXIVM and also became one of Raniere’s many sexual partners, he said. All had to comply with a series of strict rules: not to have sex with other men, not to use contraceptives, not to fatten and not to tell anyone. At one point, Raniere tried to seduce her and her older sister into a trio, she denounced. But before things could go so far, he said:

The situation worsened when a younger sister, at the time of only 15 years, was sent to the world of NXIVM, the witness said. When Raniere told her that she was having sex with the teenage sister, she initially felt “jealous” that she “made me wait until my 18th birthday.” He saw his younger sister fall into such a deep depression that it began to be cut. In retrospect, “I deeply regret that I did not get it from there,” he added. As tensions with Raniere increased, he stopped talking to the sister in the middle and ordered one of his most loyal followers to put her in a bedroom where there was only a mattress, a pen and paper to write apologies to the leader. That follower, Lauren Salzman, testified as a witness who cooperates with the government that what was supposed to be a brief punishment for the sister extended almost two years by orders of Raniere and with the approval of her parents. When she finally demanded that she be let out in 2010, she was sent back to México.La sister will continue her story with more testimonies at the trial on Tuesday. Salzman hinted that he doesn’t have a happy ending. Relatives “had a close relationship when they arrived with us, and those relationships were incredibly fractured,” said Salzman. “And I don’t know how you can recover one day from that. I think it’s terrible. ”
