The Senate of the Republic elected Margarita Ríos-Farjat as the new Minister of the Supreme Court of Justice on Thursday, to serve a 15-year term in office.
The senators voted Diana Alvarez Maury, 25 to Ana Laura Magaloni Kerpel, and 94 for Margarita Ríos-Farjat.
The current holder of the Tax Administration System (SAT) will fill the vacancy left by Eduardo Medina Mora, who resigned and faces complaints to the Attorney General’s Office of the Republic for alleged money laundering.
Margarita Ríos Farjat worked in the Judiciary between 1996 and 1999, worked in the private sector and holds a doctorate from Tec de Monterrey.
During the discussion on the eligibility of the applicants, the PAN senator, Damian Zepeda, said that only with Ana Laura Magaloni did the conflict of interest be avoided, or of having subordination to the executive branch.
“Are we going to put someone who works in the Executive Branch today as a minister of the Court? I don’t think it’s right,” he said of Rios-Farjat, who currently has the sAT holder.
