MEXICO CITY.-Due to the deal of union dues for several years, the former leader of the National Union of Education Workers (SNTE), Elba Esther Gordillo, cannot seek a position within the organization.
Alfonso Cepeda, general secretary of the union, detailed that it is necessary, in order to participate in any stage of the processes, to have the union dues delivered in a timely manner, and to be in force within this organization.
“In the case of the person asking, there is a very important lag in the whole union fee to our organization,” he said this morning at a press conference.
“Our statute states that it is an active member of the trade union organization who contributes 1 per cent of its salary for union support, if for years and particularly for 10 months this contribution has not been given, because obviously this contribution has not been delivered, because obviously this contribution has not been have conditions for
to be able to participate at this time.”

Cepeda abounded that if he paid the arrears, Gordillo could participate internally.
“There is room in this trade union organisation and there is room for all education workers without exception, on the condition, I insist, that they are aware of their trade union contribution,” he said.
“The moment when colleagues, colleagues who return because they have asked for, for example, unpaid leave, that there are many, who then rejoin and catch up with their union quota, fully regain their union rights.”
In addition, the leader of the SNTE ruled that the choice of national leadership should be advanced, as requested by members of the Maestros stream for Mexico, near Gordillo.
“It is neither a personal whim nor a decision of our own, but we were elected democratically in February 2018 at the Sixth National Extraordinary Congress held in Puerto Vallarta.”
In that sense, he minimized the representativeness of this internal current.
“There are many expressions in this Union, from the Coordinator, which is the expression that we recognize as the one with the most strength and we can even accept that it represents 8 percent of the union’s membership.
“Otherwise, there are no significant expressions, there are movements that are called bases, there are movements that are called masterful revolutionary action, some other movement called a trade union renewal movement and which are very small expressions, they don’t have a significant presence that can put pressure on most of our union’s education workers to be able to do the process the other way around,” he explained.
This Sunday, Alfonso Cepeda reported on the adoption of the Regulations for the Election of Sectional Directives, which will be carried out by universal, free, direct, secret, personal and non-transferable vote.
Under this new method 30 sectional committees will be renewed in the year, starting with eight from February.
