Yes, Chinese banks are disinfecting their money
On Saturday, March 14, the People’s Bank of China announced that it will launch a new strategy to curb the spread of the Covid-19 coronavirus. China will disinfect money in circulation through ultraviolet rays, high temperatures and isolation for one to two weeks.
“After this quarantine period, the duration of which depends on the severity of the coronavirus epidemic in the region concerned, banknotes can be put back into circulation,” said Fan Yifei, deputy governor of the Central Bank of China.
According to the press release issued by the Chinese government, money from high-risk areas such as hospitals or animal markets will be “specially treated.”
China’s national global global times also said that the Guangzhou branch of the Central Bank will destroy the high-risk banknotes so as not to put them back into circulation.
In addition to China, South Korea and Hungary took similar steps to disinfect their money.

Dirty money
Thanks to WHO we know that the most common contagion medium of the new coronavirus is through being in contact with the respiratory droplets of someone who is infected.
But touching a surface or object that was in contact with someone who has Covid-19 and taking their hands to their face afterwards is also a form of contagion. Of course, this includes money, although the World Health Organization (WHO) does not recognize cash as one of the main vectors of transmission of the SARScov2 virus.
According to comparative analyses with other coronaviruses of the same family (such as SARS and MERS), SARScov2 – covid-19- causes is believed to remain on inert surfaces for up to nine days and may also remain on the fabric or paper.
As a result, WHO recommends washing your hands frequently, especially after grabbing money and before cooking.
So no matter how many times you’ve heard it: Wash your hands.
