translated from Spanish: Mayor of Xico, Veracruz, defends Holiday village in pandemic

The mayor of the municipality of Xico, Veracruz, Gloria Galván, defended the start of the Illuminated Villa, a public Christmas event, in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Galván argued that if people do not die from the virus, they will die of something else, in the face of questions of organizing a massive event.

“People who go day by day are about to collapse and we’re going to have other very different problems, there can be more crime, and well, if they’re not going to die of one thing, they’re going to die of something else, I think we have to learn to live,” he said.

The mayor was also justified in saying that she received a letter from villagers and entrepreneurs requesting to incentivize the economy.
“The economy cannot be stopped. I received a letter asking me to (reopen business) they’re going to close their businesses,” Xico’s municipal president insisted.
“I don’t think there’s going to be a pandemic, I think everyone has their measurements, but I think it’s been regulated, I don’t think (contagions will increase),” he said of the opening of the Illuminated Villa on November 29th.
