The initiative for the decriminalization of abortion in Quintana Roo was approved in Local Congressional Commissions.
After suspending the discussion of the opinion last Thursday, for lack of quorum, on Tuesday the Committees on Constitutional Points, Justice, Health and Social Welfare, Human Rights and Gender Equality resumed work and approved the opinion.

The opinion reforming the Constitution, the Penal Code, the Civil Code and the Quintana Roo Health Law was approved with 12 votes in favour and 11 against.
The approved proposal states that “Quintana Roo recognizes, protects and guarantees the right to life of every human being, except for the exceptions established by law”, and indicates that termination of pregnancy will be allowed until 12 weeks gestation.
The initiative is expected to be discussed in the plenary session of the Quintana Roo Congress on Wednesday.
If approved by two-thirds of the local Congress, constitutional reform must be endorsed by most state Councils.
