Foreign Relations Secretary Marcelo Ebrard admitted that he will seek the presidency in 2024 and thanked President Andrés Manuel López Obrador for considering him as a possible replacement.
During tuesday’s morning conference, the foreign minister said that when the rules and times are met, he will be ready to participate.
“First of all I said that we have to thank the president for taking us into account. Secondly, there are two and a half years to go, let us devote ourselves to work, let us be efficient, let us respect others, we act on that basis, let us not lose concentration of what we are doing.
“Let us be consistent, persevering and loyal, and of course, that when the rules are given and the times come, -we are halfway through the government-, when that comes, we will be prepared to participate according to the rules that will be given in due course. That is essentially what was said there, the information is true and that is why it was said, so that there is no speculation.

Ebrard referred to a meeting he had with his closest aides where he said he will seek the presidential nomination for 2024.
“We are going to take the president at his word (…) Yes, yes we are going to compete,” he said during a weekend meeting in Toluca, State of Mexico.
According to the newspaper Reforma, in his message, according to some attendees, he reproached that a group inside Morena has undertaken a campaign to kill him “politically” after the collapse of a lock on Line 12 of the Metro, which caused the death of 26 people; however, he said he was reassured by the progress of the investigations.

“I was thought dead, I’ve been killed politically many times, but here we are. We’re going to participate by the rules of the game,” Ebrard said.
The meeting was attended by several SRE officials, legislators, and old collaborators such as diplomat Carmen Moreno Toscano and Óscar Argüelles; or young people like Daniel Sibaja, re-elected trustee of Ecatepec and close in turn to the national president of Morena, Mario Delgado. Also Carlos Candelaria, director of Passport Offices of the Foreign Ministry; Daniel Millán, his chief of advisors; Nunila Pedraza, political activist in Ocoyoacac; Luis Walton, former leader of the Citizen Movement in Guerrero and Ismael Burgueño, delegate of Morena Baja California.
Juan Carlos Natale, of the Green Ecologist Party, uploaded a photograph on social media with the federal official. “A pride to be your friend and to be with you, especially from the beginning of nowhere, for the presidential succession! Thank you for considering me at this great but small event you held as friends and for the opportunity to participate in the project! Let’s go with everything Marcelo 24,” he wrote.
“Everyone has the right”
López Obrador said everyone who wants to participate has a right, although the people will decide and put everyone in their place.
He stressed that the members of his cabinet are fulfilling their responsibilities, so there is a generational change.
“The people are already the main protagonists of change, there is already full democracy, it is the citizens who decide, the strength of public opinion is already very powerful (…) All those who want to participate, women and men are within their rights and leave in the past those practices of tapadismo, the designation of the finger, “he said.
