Mexico will receive 1.7 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine from the pharmaceutical company Moderna from the United States after the Federal Commission for protection against health risks (Cofepris) authorized its emergency use.
“We have just been informed by the U.S. government that over the weekend 1,750,000 doses of the Moderna vaccine offered by Vice President (Kamala) Harris to President (Andrés Manuel) López Obrador arrive,” Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard said wednesday on Twitter.

“In a month the second dose will arrive. Our sincere gratitude,” he added.
On August 10, Ebrard himself announced that the U.S. government had agreed to send 8.5 million Moderna and AstraZeneca vaccines to Mexico during a call between President López Obrador and the U.S. vice president.

Mexico had already approved seven other vaccines: those of Pfizer-BioNTech, AstraZeneca, CanSino, Sputnik V, Sinovac, Covaxin and Jannsen.
Mexico, with 126 million inhabitants, began implementing immunizations against COVID-19 last December. To date, 54.8 million people have been vaccinated, 29.2 million of them with two doses.
The country is hit by a third wave of coronavirus and record levels of infection have been reached in recent days.
The undersecretary of Prevention and Health Promotion, Hugo López-Gatell, said that after the approval, the Moderna vaccine will soon be integrated into the National Vaccination Plan against COVID.
