Victorino Antilef resigned from his position as table coordinator due to discrepancies with the indigenous consultation process of the Convention

The constituent representative of the Mapuche people, Victorino Antilef, resigned from the Commission on the Rights of Indigenous and Plurinational Peoples of the Constitutional Convention, accusing disagreement with the indigenous consultation process.
“It means a dangerous precedent for future consultation processes and a setback in the struggle of peoples in search of their dignity,” he said.
“It flagrantly transformed the State’s obligation to consult administrative and legislative measures, which may affect indigenous peoples, into a mere process of participation through files that, however didactic they may be intended, do not comply with international standards in form or content,” he added.
“The claim of consultation through the base document, of the didactic sheets alluded to, and that completely replaced the one presented by this coordination incurs in the violation of article 19, nª2, of the Regulation of Consultation and Indigenous Participation,” added the Mapuche representative.
The approval of the aforementioned text suffered many delays, due to discussions within the working table and the controversy it had with the Executive for the lack of resources for the realization of this same.
Victorino Antilef in his resignation added that the lack of resources that the Secretariat of Indigenous Consultation has does not ensure the minimum labor rights required for this cause, so the idea that some constituents have had to seek in private entities the missing help and not in the State, leaves the process in the hands of people who do not have “the required cultural relevance, nor the trust of the communities or territories.”
It should be noted that the current regulation does not provide for a mechanism against the resignation of a coordinator. Therefore, coordinator Margarita Vargas indicated that they hope that this week a name could emerge for the replacement of Antilef.
