‘Conservatives are bothered by scholarships, they think it is even communism’: AMLO

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador defended the universal scholarship that the government of Mexico City will give to public school students at the basic level and assured that the criticism comes from conservative thought.
“Yesterday I was seeing the controversy, it bothers them that they give scholarships to the students, that is populism, paternalism. I think they must be thinking it’s even communism, because that’s conservative thinking,” he said.

The support of the universal scholarship replaces the old scholarship that contemplated only students with an average of 9 or 10 grades, so it will now be universal for students from the capital of the country.
The head of government of Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum, said that a qualification does not define the talent of children, so the universal scholarship seeks that “all students finish their studies and can continue studying until university, if they wish.”

Sheinbaum said that his universal scholarship project has to do with the country project of the moral economy, with the Welfare State.
While the old project of only awarding scholarships to “talented” children with averages of 9 and 10 is part of neoliberalism, he said.
“The scholarship is a recognition for all public school students, which basically becomes a debate between those who encourage selfishness in the face of solidarity.”

I have read the controversy on social networks for the welfare scholarship for all girls and boys of public schools compared to the old talent scholarship program, exclusive for those who had 9 and 10 grades. (1/5)
