Shots fired at a hotel in Quintana Roo kill foreign tourists; two more injured

A shooting reported inside the Xcaret hotel, in Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo, left one dead and two more people injured, all of Canadian origin.
State Security Secretary Lucio Hernandez Gutierrez said the shots were fired “from an argument between hotel guests.”
He also released images of the guest who allegedly shot at foreign tourists.

“The authorities of the coordination group deploy strong operation for his capture, any information for prompt arrest we will be deeply grateful,” he posted.

The violence in Quintana Roo has impacted the tourist area where there have been several attacks and clashes between alleged criminal groups, according to the authorities themselves.
Last November, a confrontation between alleged criminal groups on a beach in Puerto Morelos left two dead.
Days earlier, on October 20, two foreign tourists were killed and three more injured by firearms after another shootout inside a bar in Tulum.
The Hotel Association of Cancun, Puerto Morelos and Isla Mujeres has demanded both local and federal authorities actions to guarantee safety to visitors and residents, in the face of recent episodes of violence in the southeast.
They even pointed out that tourism and economic reactivation “hang in the balance”, because of the “fierce and ruthless struggle between criminal gangs dedicated to the sale and distribution of drugs on the beaches and that in recent months is fought with greater intensity for the control of ‘the squares'”.
