UK accuses Russia of wanting to install ‘pro-Russian leader’ in Ukraine

The conflict that Russia unleashed by deploying 100,000 troops on the border with Ukraine, set off the alarms of several Western countries, who consider that the Russians are preparing an attack on the neighboring country. While Moscow, the Russian capital, rejected accusations of possible aggression, tension continues to rise in the region. In recent hours, the United Kingdom, through its Foreign Ministry, issued a statement in which it accused Russia of orchestrating an alleged plan to install “a pro-Russian leader in Kiev, while an invasion is proposed to occupy Ukraine.” In addition, the British body noted that former Ukrainian MP Yevhen Murayev is being considered as a “possible candidate” to replace Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, while publishing a list of Ukrainian politicians who, according to the Ministry, “maintain links with Russian intelligence services.”

NEW: We will not tolerate Kremlin plot to install pro-Russian leadership in Ukraine. The Kremlin knows a military incursion would be a massive strategic mistake & the UK and our partners would impose a severe cost on Russia. https://t.co/XfxSlQqMt9 — Liz Truss (@trussliz)

“The UK’s position on Ukraine is also clear. We unequivocally support its sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders, including Crimea. Ukraine is an independent and sovereign country,” the statement concluded. On the other hand, the US embassy in Ukraine asked the White House to authorize the evacuation in the coming days of all non-essential diplomatic personnel, as well as their families. Sources close to the Ukrainian government confirmed that the United States has already informed the Kiev authorities of the request and the evacuations “could begin next week at the earliest,” as reported by the Europa Press news agency. In that sense, the CNN network recalled that the US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, emphasized after his meeting with the Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, that any “invasion” of Russia to Ukraine will generate a “severe response” from the United States. However, the Ukrainian Head of State recently contacted Blinken and, as it transpired, told him that a diplomatic evacuation would be an “overreaction” that could weaken confidence in the Ukrainian government in the midst of the conflict with Russia.
